The Union Association of Subway and Premetro Workers (Metrodelegados) has called for a total service stoppage for next Wednesday, November 20, as a protest measure for the death of a worker exposed to asbestos, confirmed by the union.
The union issued a statement detailing that the measures will consist of a staggered halt of the subway and premetro lines. The cessation of activities will begin with lines A and B, which will stop from 10 to 12 hours. Then, from 12 to 14 hours, it will be the turn of lines D and H. Finally, from 14 to 16 hours, lines C, E, and the Premetro will be affected.
The deceased worker, Jorge Navarro, worked at the ConstituciĆ³n Workshop, and in 2020 he was diagnosed with lung cancer due to asbestos exposure. The Union Association of Subway and Premetro Workers continues to advocate for the elimination of all asbestos in the network and the acquisition of new fleets free of this carcinogenic material.
In the new statement, they expressed that they consider the death of Jorge Navarro as murder, holding the concessionaire company Emova and the City Government responsible for exposing workers, users, and neighbors of the network to a prohibited mineral.
The main demand is the immediate removal of asbestos throughout the network, the replacement of contaminated fleets, the declaration of emergency for line B, and the inclusion of all workers in the Risk Agents Survey.
The union assures that they will continue with these measures until they obtain guarantees of optimal health conditions for both workers and users of the subway and premetro transport.
